NomVallex-Denom

Czech non-verbal predicates motivated by nouns and their syntactic behavior

The project deals with both theoretical and lexicographic treatment of valency of non-verbal predicates motivated by nouns. Proceeding from the classification of the predicates with respect to the word-formation process they are formed by, syntactic behavior of the following types of non-verbal predicates will be analyzed: (i) nouns formed by circumfixation, (ii) nouns and adjectives formed by composition, (iii) denominal adjectives. Building upon the valency theory of the Functional Generative Description, both deep and surface valency properties of the predicates will be studied, including the type of syntax (active or passive) the predicates may display. The research findings will be integrated in the NomVallex lexicon which will then form a solid basis for further theoretical research into noun and adjectival valency. In order to facilitate comparison between valency of denominal non-verbal predicates and valency of lexical units derivationally related to them, the respective derivational relations will be captured in NomVallex and the units will be interlinked with DeriNet.
